OLDEN DOUGLAS ROGERS COURTLAND SOLDIER LOSES LIFE ABROAD Pvt. Olden Douglas Rogers, who was killed in France on October 18, was the husband of Mrs. Bessie Davis Rogers of Courtland. Besides his wife he is survived by two small sons, his mother, Mrs. B.B. Rogers of Courtland, and his brother, Rudolph Rogers of Franklin. Pvt. Rogers was born in Isle of Wight County on August 27, 1911, and moved with his family to Courtland the following year where he lived for the remainder of his life. He attended Courtland High School until June, 1927 and the following two sessions he was a student at Randolph-Macon Academy, after which he attended Randolph-Macon College. For seven years he was employed by the Richmond Guano Company until 1941, when he formed a partnership with Edwin P. Westbrook, Jr., in Courtland, this being dissolved on January 18, 1944, when Douglas enlisted in the army. He trained at Camp Blanding, Fla., and after receiving his basic training he sailed from New York in June of this year. He fought in Italy and France. Doug had a most pleasing personality, making friends wherever he went. His honesty and general stability of character was never questioned by those who knew him. Before entering the service he was a member of the Virginia Protective Force and distinguished himself as a fine marksman and soldier. The details of his death are not known. Pvt.
